Moving Women Forward in 2020

Dear WV Women Moving Forward,

In this first month of a new decade, we have a great deal to celebrate. In 2019, women made headlines around the world, from Chile, India, New Zealand, Hong Kong, the U.S., and yes, West Virginia, too. In 2020, with centennial celebrations of American women's right to vote, more women on ballots than ever before, and sports teams, businesses, entertainment, and every level of government making important policy changes, there's no doubt that women will make even more waves this year. We can begin right at home in West Virginia, starting with paid family leave initiatives, Women's and Girl's Day at the legislature, and a host of 2020 events.

As we look ahead to women's history month in March when WV Women Moving Forward efforts will mark the one-year anniversary, it's remarkable to consider the progress already made. Last month, many of you gathered to talk about the results-oriented work addressing workforce barriers, pay equity and educational opportunities for girls, and committed to continuing our work together. We recognized the time is right to focus on outcomes and inclusive outreach to women and men who want to move West Virginia forward. Workforce barriers, pay and education impact everyone, so anyone can, and should, team up for solutions.

We look forward to collaboration in the months ahead. For now, below is a summary of some work that is underway, takeaways from December's meeting, ideas for consideration and upcoming events and projects.

ACTIONS ALIGNED: 2020 WOMEN’S EVENT TO PUT IT ALL TOGETHER

Many organizations working on women's economic issues have expressed interest in gathering together to share and align efforts. Last month, several of you suggested that we gather together this year to learn from each other and collaborate on like-minded goals. With numerous women's celebrations commemorating the 100th anniversary of women's right to vote, some of you have also shared dates of events around the state. We are compiling a list! Feel free to add to the calendar at the bottom of this newsletter. If you would like to help plan or sponsor a collaborative event that provides a one stop showcase of all the great work in our state, please email wvforward@mail.wvu.edu by February 7.
