ICYMI: Panel on how to support West Virginians during “pink collar recession”

Now pegged as the “pink collar recession,” the COVID-19 pandemic continues to disproportionately upend the home and work lives of women. Last week, WVWMF members Cindy Fitch, Michelle Foster and Priscila Santos joined women from across the state to discuss how West Virginians can support moms, girls, young women, women of color and families now and moving forward.

The dynamic conversation resonated with one participant, who remarked, “As an African American working mother of three and caregiver of my mother, I want to THANK YOU all for the information today!”

Thanks to the Alliance for the Economic Development of Southern WV for hosting the discussion as part of their 40-TOP Virtual Roundtable Series.

Key points included:

  • Salary negotiations can help women get back into the workforce faster for equal pay for equal work, bridging the gender wage gap exacerbated by the COVID-19 crisis.
  • Access to reliable, affordable and safe dependent care is more important than ever to get working caregivers and families back to work, which will help fast-track our economic recovery.
  • As digital and remote learning continue, targeted initiatives to positively engage school-aged and teenage girls will be even more important to ensure they have the necessary support to reach their full potential in school and beyond.
